Interview: Spellbound Dazzle
Hello SPELLBOUND DAZZLE, I am happy to have you here to talk to my and the readers, we appreciate it very much!
1. Please give a short introduction about your band first.
Hello everyone, first of all thank you for the interview, we're a four members band: Kreso Stekovic vocals and keyboards - Branko Stekovic (me) guitars - Stefano Artus drums and the youngest one Dante Bridda on bass.
2. What does the band name SPELLBOUND DAZZLE stand for:
Well, after a while, we didn’t found the right name, so I said to my brother "now I'm gonna open the dictionary and will take some inspiration" the first word I pointed with my finger was "Spellbound" and we immediately liked it, but bands with the same name already existed and then we joint "dazzle" and it became SPELLBOUND DAZZLE. It means "magic light" and we thought about a blinding light, like when you look at it you're just spellbound … pretty simple, ha ha ha, don't you think?
3. You the Stekovic brothers had to leave your country because of the jugoslavian civil war and went to Italy and started a new life there. I can really understand that it was a hard time for the brothers back then. So you first have to settle in there… So how did you ran into building a metal band?
Yes of course, we had some hard times, any war brings only misery and suffering and in the end there are no winners, they all loose. But it's ordinary people who suffers while others pull the strings and watch the game, these are kind of things that you feel unless you experienced it. So better think positive, watch further, and feel happy because life is short. We did the same by making what we most like: forming a band and playing music. Me and my brother Kreso like music since ever and used to play almost every day in our garage. He was playing the drums and I played the guitar so we were looking for a singer and a bass player but after some unsatisfying castings Kreso said "let me be the singer and let’s try to find a drummer and bass player" and this was exactly what we did. Stefano and Dante joint the band, two hell-playing guys!
4. I read that some of the fans compare your sound with the sound of System of a Down. So is it maybe intended to sound ab bit like them?
It happens very often that people compares us with SOAD and I have to say that we like them but we barely knew them when some of the "Unreal FairyTales" songs were written (4 or 5 years ago). We simply put what we've been inspired of, but not absolutely intended to be like them. I think that we like to put our roots in our music, that's balcanic music which has some typical russian and arabic scales that may remind of SOAD, but that's about our culture and it's not trying to sound like them. Maybe it's also for the multi rhythm changes in a single song or some weird and complicated bridges we use to put in …
5. Congratulations on the release of your new album Unreal FairyTales which is out since january 2011. So where did you recorded it and who was the producer?
The album has been recorded at Venice with Marino de Angeli (Majestic Studio) then it was mixed and mastered at the Woodhouse Studio by our producer Siggi Bemm. We've learned a lot from both, they are men of rock with a huge experience in music, this helped us through making "Unreal FairyTales". One thing I can tell you is that beyond recording we had a lot of fun, with Marino, we made "chair races" in the studio and in the Woodhouse we had a lot of ping-pong matches and a lot of alternative activities like laughin', laughin', and yet laughin' …
6. What is Unreal FairyTales all about? Has it got a special story around?
We like fairytales and wanted to make a special one in our way and the cover of the album says it all. It is divided in two parts: heaven and hell, so good and evil are represented by the two heads, the red devil is "Spaceman" (from the song "Spaceman") and the other head is the "hunter" who is trying to catch him. But between them there's a chess representing a mental match like good vs. evil and it is a long chess (it means that this match started a long time ago) and now is about to end, that's why the heads are located right at the end of the chess. To be more precise, this chess is a river painted with black and white squares running in the viewer’s direction and it ends with a waterfall (or chess fall, if we talk in "unrealfairytalish"). This means that the match is still running, but soon there must be a winner so they have to make their choices and also make their final move. Who will be the winner?
7. What are your future plans with SPELLBOUND DAZZLE? And what are you guys doing at the moment?
We're are promoting our album, play as much shows as possible and are also composing some new material at the moment. We are also trying to organize some more shows, but it is still not easy for new acts like us, by the way, if any reader wants to call us for playing in his garage it is welcome ha ha ha … We hope that we keep going on this way and make music for the rest of our lives.
8. Which huge bands would you look forward to play with sometime?
Oh… I don't know… we would be honored to open the show for any huge band, but we still have to work hard and hope to play as soon as possible with any rock legend. I think these are unique and memorable experiences that you will always remember and that offers a lot of things to learn.
9. Which are your musical idols?
I'll tell you a few and our favourites which we listen since we were teenagers and even earlier: Queen, Beatles, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Metallica, Pantera, Extreme, Dream Theater or some classic music, sometimes even pop, balcanic popular and rock music (because it represents us). As you can see we are different music genres lovers and that's probably the reason why also "Unreal FairyTales" is a mixture between different music styles. If I have to tell you about the rest of the music and of the bands that we listen, this page wouldn't give us enough space… ;-))
10. Now please leave a little message for all your fans!
We want to thank you all for your support which is really important for us and we hope that you still keep on with this. We're pretty sure that soon or later we'll play in your city and when it happens there will be a big party with a lot of beer and music…
Thanks very much for taking the time to answer my questions. All best wishes to you in Italy, keep up the good work and don`t forget to tour Germany in the near future, and also good luck for your show tonite. I will def buy the album!
