Interview:ADRIAN BECE (Adrian Bece Designs)
1. Hi Adrian, tell us something about you.
Adrian: Hello, my name is Adrian Bece. I'm a graphic designer from Croatia, so far I've been working for few bands, musicians and music-related websites on artworks, album covers and other graphical designs. I designed album cover and other artworks for Jamie Mallender (bass player for ex-Black Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin) and logos and banners for my good friend Susi Eggers from "Rocket Queen Promotion".
2. How did it all begin and what were your first projects?
Adrian: It all started back in 2007. when I got a graphic design software from my high school classmate that I still use today. But I've never had any major interest in it other than working on a small banners and basic amateur designs until April of 2009. when my design won the competition on www.black-sabbath.com, I got an autographed "The Devil You Know" album by all band members of Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath with Dio era lineup). Since then I was very motivated and that is where it all started.
3. How did you meet Jamie Mallender?
Adrian: I've met Jamie on www.black-sabbath.com on October 2009. where he posted the news about his first upcoming album. I asked him if he needs any artworks done, I showed him few of my designs and we were in business. Few weeks later his first album "Return To Bass" was released with my full album artwork. I was really honored and happy. And now I'm working on artwork for Jamie's next album set to be released later this year. It has been a great challenge and exciting experience working with Jamie and I'm absolutely thrilled and happy with freedom and space he gave me to create and allowed me to experiment a lot.
4. Is it difficult to make album artwork in general?
Adrian: From my point of view and my experience, yes. It is difficult to make an EXCELLENT album artwork because the goal is to capture the feel and style of music and present it to a public in a interesting way, and that's quite a challenge. Album artwork must always reflect the style and feel of the music from the album and should never mislead the listener. The hardest part is finding the perfect way to present and after that it only gets easier and easier.
5. How long does it take for you to make a full album artwork?
Adrian: Well, that mostly depends on my mood, motivation and inspiration. I could finish it in 1 week if I get everything right from the start and if I'm perfectly satisfied with the end result. Or I could take it slow and easy, take my time and experiment or make multiple variations and finish it within a month.
6. Do you have any advice for other artwork designers out there?
Adrian: Well all I can say is: don't be afraid to experiment and don't be afraid to try something new and unique. Do a lot of research about what are you currently doing and if you are making artworks for a musician or a band, it's essential to listen to their music. Knowing what type of music are they playing is just not enough, you need to get the style and feel of their music just right.
7. Could you tell us something about your current projects?
Adrian: Currently I'm working on an full album artwork and promotional designs for a new Jamie Mallender's album "Tunes From The Mothership" set to be released later this summer. Keep checking www.jamiemallender.co.uk for more news and updates. For me it's a bigger and more challenging project than Jamie's previous album "Return To Bass". It will have beautiful and very unique artwork style fit to his awesome music. I can't count how many artworks I've made for this project and I can't wait to release them all when the album is out. I'm still looking for more work so feel free to contact me via Facebook or my website TILL WE DIE Designs.
8. Anything you wish to add before we finish this interview?
